Gosforth Hall Blengdale
Runners Handicap Run – Tuesday May 22 2007
In preparation for next months Gosforth 10 Mile road race on Wednesday 13
June the Blengdale Runners Club congregated at The Gosforth Hall Hotel on
Tuesday for their annual handicap 7 mile run around the Blengdale forest.
Barbara and Rod Davies owners of the Gosforth Hall and keen Blengdale
supporters had kindly offered their beer garden to host the start and
finish and sponsored the prizes with bottles of wine and polo-shirts for
the first home.
Lindsay Buck was the first of 12 runners set off by handicapper Mel Gould,
with runners setting off at varying intervals until Dave Atkinson, 17
minutes down, was released from the traps.
Supporters waited anxiously at the finish for the first arrival and it was
Seascale based Christine Simcock (actual time 55.52) who appeared first
round the church corner. Two minutes down Angela Ball and Chris Cripps
(both 47.25) were closely followed in by Lindsay Buck (59.43), Dave
Atkinson (42.49 fastest time), Chris Dowling (52.12), Peter Manning
(52.39), Andy Fletcher (51.54), Annette Morris (53.53), Mike Kenwright
(54,55) and finally Gay and Richard Eastoe running together in Richard's
first club event, finishing in a time of 59.59. Gay had also ran the
Windermere Marathon on the previous Sunday in a time of less than four
hours and was pleased to announce that another club member Simon Mosley had
come first in the Brathy 10 Windermere Marathons in 10 Days Challenge. Ali
Strafford made up a Blengdale threesome in supporting the return of the
popular race.
Rod and Barbara thanked all for supporting the event and presented each
runner with a commemorative certificate before retiring to the bar.

Running is obviously in the blood in the
Bowness and Amor families as they took
first and second places in the Gosforth 10 Road Race and the fun run.
International Cumberland fell runner, Alan Bowness, of Bigrigg, won the
annual Gosforth 10-mile road race. Hot on his heels was CFR's Martin Amor,
of Cleator Moor. But the event was made more unique when Alan's nephew,
James Bowness, won the village fun run from Lee Amor, Martin's son, in
second.
In the main event, Geoff Ayres in fourth (first MV 40) and Neil Cockbain,
fifth,
made up the CFR quartet that took the team prize for the fourth year
running.
In the ladies race Julie Jones (Derwent Athletic LV45) eased clear of Pat
Parker
(Cumberland AC LV50) and Blengdale runner Annette Morris (LV40), of
Gosforth,
to record her first victory.
Local Blengdale runners featured strongly with Kevin Kirkham ninth overall
in
63.24 coming in just ahead of team mates Larry Abel (64:02), Dave Atkinson
(66.05), Mike Kenwright (70:02), Andy Fletcher (79.41), and Kevin's dad,
Richard
(89.16).
Alongside Annette Morris in the Blengdale ladies team were Christine Bradley
and
Lindsay Buck.
In the fun run, Joanne Buchanan and Charlotte Boow battled it out in third
and
fourth to become the first village girls home, taking the under-16 and
under-12
girls prizes. (Report courtesy of the Whitehaven News)
-
Blengdale secured the
third place team prize at the Kirkcudbright Half Marathon on 29th June -
Larry Abel, Mike Kenwright, Chris Dowling and Richard Kirkham were the
successful runners. It was Chris's first race for almost a year because of
injury and it was Richard's first ever Half Marathon! Well done lads.
-
Blengdale was well
represented at this years Keswick to Barrow 40 mile event. Lindsay Buck,
Christine Bradley, Larry Abel, Dave Atkinson and Mike Kenwright all had good
runs as part of the BNFL team that was superbly organised by Chris Dowling.
